Councils may face legal action over roadworks safety

More than 20 local authorities around the country could reportedly be facing legal action because of their failure to implement safety measures at the site of roadworks.

Reports this morning say the councils have been given a month to rectify the situation and ensure that warning signs and speed restrictions are in place on all temporary road surfaces.

The move follows a nationwide investigation by the Health and Safety Authority into the way local authorities manage safety at roadworks sites.

The investigation was launched following the Kentstown school bus crash in Co Meath last year, which happened on a temporary road surface.
