Shels out of Cup

27/08/2006 - 20:57:34
Shelbourne 0 Derry City 1

Darren Kelly scored the only goal as Derry City knocked Shelbourne out of the FAI Carlsberg Cup for the third year running to keep themselves on course for a domestic treble.

Kelly struck for the only goal of the game on 19 minutes as Shels’ indiscipline was clinically punished. Stuart Byrne was booked for a needless trip on Ciaran Martyn some 40 yards out from goal.

But further punishment ensured from Kevin Deery’s free kick which picked out central defender Kelly who found the net with a downward header. Shels huffed and puffed for much of the remainder of the game as Derry doggedly defended their lead.

Glen Crowe headed wide from Joseph Ndo’s corner before Bobby Ryan fired a shot wide. It got no better for Pat Fenlon’s side in the second half. Byrne shot wide two minutes in before a fumble by Derry keeper David Forde from Sean Dillon’s header needed a frantic clearance.

With Shels chasing the game, Derry almost snatched a second eight minutes from time, Delaney having to stretch to get to Mark Farren’s header with Sean Holmes ballooning the rebound over the bar.
