Marriage legislation to increase equality between religions

Proposed changes to marriage legislation are aimed at allowing greater equality between different religions.

Under the current law, a registrar must supervise non-Catholic and Protestant weddings.

The removal of this requirement will be just one of the changes brought in next year to update the 19th Century marriage guidelines.

Other new measures include the right of couples to get married in a variety of public locations.
