US forces clash with Iraqi militants at insurgent mosque
25/08/2006 - 17:08:22US forces fired tank rounds at a mosque today in the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi after coming under attack from militants inside, the US military command said.
One US soldier was lightly wounded, but it was unclear whether there were civilian or militant casualties, it said in a statement.
The wounded US soldier later returned to duty.
The troops were attacked from the Al Qadir Al Kilmi mosque shortly after noon, the military said.
“The complex attack included small arms and machine gun fire, rocket propelled grenades, hand grenades, and an improvised explosive device attack.”
The soldiers returned fire, eventually firing several rounds from a tank into the mosque, the military said. It said the mosque’s dome and minaret suffered serious structural damage.
