Annan: EU contribution allows for credible Lebanon force
25/08/2006 - 16:58:16UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said today that contributions by EU member states to an expanded UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon will allow the world body to deploy a “credible” force to the region.
“Europe is providing the backbone of the force,” Annan said after meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
“We can now begin to put together a credible force.” Annan’s comment came after the EU announced that it would deploy between 5,600-6,900 ground troops to the UN, with additional naval and logistic units.
