Warning over liquid explosives threat
24/08/2006 - 13:34:56UK airport security equipment can only detect some of the wide range of liquid explosives now being used, it was revealed today.
The threat from liquid explosives being carried in hand luggage has led to heightened security at airports in the last two weeks.
Today, security officials at the British Department for Transport explained the thinking behind the new measures, how long they might have to be in place and the continuing threat.
They said they were not announcing any change to the present regime and it would be up to UK ministers to decide just when, or if, restrictions could be eased.
Officials repeated warnings made earlier this week from the police that the threat was “real, here, deadly and enduring”.
