Garcia rules out Wentworth outing

24/08/2006 - 08:03:52
Sergio Garcia has decided not to play in the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth the week before the Ryder Cup.

The Spaniard’s decision makes Argentina’s Angel Cabrera eligible for the 16-man field, headed this year by world number one Tiger Woods.

Six-time-winner Ernie Els, defending champion Michael Campbell and world number three Jim Furyk have all confirmed their participation, as have Europeans Luke Donald, David Howell, Colin Montgomerie and Simon Khan, South Africans Retief Goosen and Tim Clark and Canadian Mike Weir.

Garcia said in Akron, where he was playing today in the Bridgestone World Championship: “This is my sixth week out of seven. I’ve got next week off, but then I go to Switzerland (he defends the Omega European Masters against a line-up that includes Michelle Wie).

“If I played Wentworth as well, then the Ryder Cup, then the American Express (at The Grove in Watford) it would be four in a row and I very rarely do that.”
