Many workers being denied full employment rights

The issue of employment rights remains a significant problem in Ireland, according to a report published by the social services agency Comhairle.

The report says the Citizens Information Service received 90,000 queries about employment rights last year, mainly from non-unionised or migrant workers complaining about underpayment, illegal contracts or unfair dismissal.

Comhairle says many of these people work for smaller employers and find it difficult to exercise their rights.

It is calling on the Government to ensure all employers are accountable by closing the wide gap between employment law and the ability to enforce it.
