GlaxoSmithKline to begin major research project in Cork
Global pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline is to undertake a major research project in Cork in collaboration with UCC.
The move was announced today by Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin, who said it represented a major step in the Government's strategy to promote industrial-academic collaborations in the area of research and development.
He also said it demonstrated Ireland's ability to attract significant R&D projects against world-class international competition.
The €13.7m research project is supported by IDA Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland.
Its aim is to find new drugs for the treatment of bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
GlaxoSmithKline employs 1,600 people in Ireland, 500 of them at its plants in Currabinny, Co Cork, which will be closely involved in the new research.
