Gunfire in capital after Congo election result

Heavy gunfire echoed through the Congolese capital today, with the shooting apparently centred close to the home of ex-rebel leader turned presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba.

There was no immediate explanation for the gunfire, which appeared to include shots from automatic rifles as well as heavier machine guns.

Flaming projectiles could be seen flying through the air in the Kinshasa neighbourhood where Bemba lives.
