Ahern confirms Ireland will not join initial UN force

21/08/2006 - 13:46:09
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern has confirmed that Irish soldiers will not be part of the first wave of UN peacekeepers being deployed in south Lebanon.

Around 3,500 peacekeeping troops are due to be sent to the region in the coming weeks as part of a ceasefire deal that ended the recent hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

The force will eventually be increased to 15,000.

Speaking in Dublin today, Mr Ahern said the Irish Government was working to bring about peace and stability in the area, but would not put Irish soldiers in "inordinate danger".
