Boat carrying 100 immigrants sinks off Sicily
19/08/2006 - 08:41:51A boat believed to be carrying some 100 illegal immigrants trying to enter Italy sank off the coast of Sicily early this morning, according to an Italian news agency.
A rescue operation is underway.
The boat, about 10 metres long, sank some 10 miles off the coast of the island of Lampedusa.
One navy ship was already following the ship and plucked some immigrants out of the sea.
Other coast guard boats have now headed to the scene to help with the rescue operation.
