Govt urged to clarify stance on Lebanon deployment
The Green Party is calling on the Government to clarify whether it would allow Irish soldiers to get involved in disarming Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
The United Nations is still discussing the deployment of a peacekeeping force in the south of the country and whether that force should be asked to disarm the Islamic militant group.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern said yesterday that the Irish Government had not yet decided whether Irish soldiers should take part in the deployment.
However, Green Party TD John Gormley says he has failed to reveal the Government's stance on the issue of disarming Hezbollah.
Mr Gormley says the Greens would support the peacekeeping mission only if it did not have a mandate to disarm the guerrillas because this could worsen the conflict and give the impression that the international community is siding with Israel.
