America is a very competitive country, from electing the President to winning a spelling bee it’s high pressure all the way. Losers are wimps.
So in this charming film we meet 11-year-old Akeelah (Palmer) – with a lot not going for her what with a dysfunctional family, living under threat of school suspension and a spelling teacher with his own baggage – who tries out for the regional title.
Her success and progress to the national title are charted as she becomes the heroine of her community.
Young Palmer is a true little star; we’re with her all the way in a film that spells success and feel-good.
