Cech confident on comeback

17/08/2006 - 15:40:29
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has set his sights on returning to first-team action after recovering from surgery on both shoulders this summer.

Cech underwent an operation immediately after the Czech Republic were eliminated from the World Cup finals in Germany and was not fit enough to contemplate a return against Liverpool in Community Shield defeat to Liverpool last Sunday.

But the Chelsea number one is hoping to begin full training again next week even though he admits he is still unable to lift his arms higher than shoulder level.

Cech declared: “I started with special exercises aimed at the renewal of shoulder movement right after the surgery. I continue and it goes well.

“According to the check made in London the operation was successful and everything goes as planned. I am happy with it, but I still may not do anything more. I will start with the full rehabilitation next week.

“After the operation I had to make my hands move to be able to wash myself, to eat and get dressed. But I still may keep the shoulders only under their level now.”

Cech managed to hide the injury from opponents for much of the season as he helped Chelsea to a second successive Premiership crown and his country reach the World Cup.

Cech said: “We had to disguise my injury right before the qualifier against Armenia.

“Of course I did not want anyone to know about it. The same problem appeared with the other shoulder. I played with painkillers. There was no other way than an operation.

“Now I am 100% sure that this problem will not appear again.

“The prognosis of my readiness to play were directed at the beginning of the season, so I hope that they will prove correct.”
