O'Connor gets Wexford development job

16/08/2006 - 14:29:54
Wexford's first Hurling Development Administrator has been confirmed as ex-player George O'Connor.

The former midfielder, whose inter-county career spanned 17 years between 1979 and 1996, has been appointed on a three-year term and will formally begin the job next month.

O'Connor will be operating from an office at Wexford Park, with the post being funded by the Irish Sports Council via the Leinster Council, supported by the Wexford County Board.

The 46-year-old has a long association with hurling in the Model county - his late father Paddy O'Connor was a midfielder on the Wexford junior team that won the Leinster title in 1940.

A farmer by profession, O'Connor was in the running to replace John Conran as Wexford senior hurling manager in 2004 but ruled himself out, citing "family and work commitments".

In his new role, the former All-Star (1981, 1988) will be touching base with the local national schools, second level schools and clubs, and will be expected to implement the county's development plan for hurling, which has been drawn up by Conran, Jim Kilty, Mick Kinsella and John Barron.
