Kelly begins recovery process

16/08/2006 - 17:12:53
Shane Kelly has begun the long road to recovery after breaking his leg in a fall at Bath last week.

Kelly was riding Piano Player for Jamie Osborne in the World Bet Exchange - wbx.com Handicap when the three-year-old was brought down.

He broke his femur in three places but has now returned home after a longer than expected spell in hospital.

“I came home yesterday which was a little bit later than we had hoped, there was a bit of confusion with my blood,” explained Kelly.

“I lost a lot of blood during the operation which was why I was there a little bit longer but other than that the operation went well.

“I’ve had my leg plated and screwed and it’s just a case now of giving it time to recover, probably about three months or maybe a bit longer as you can’t really estimate.

“It all depends on how it heals and if the plates and screws stay in one piece.

“The operation lasted about two and a half hours and I am still in a bit of pain but you would expect that, it was quite a severe operation.

“I’m not totally bed-ridden, I’m on crutches and I can put 50% of my weight on it which means I can get out and about.

“I’m due to go in an oxygen chamber tomorrow and for a further three days next week so hopefully that will speed up the process.

“I’m going to have the stitches out in two weeks and once that has happened I will be able to get in the pool which will be a great help and that combined with the chamber will help things along.

“I’m lucky that I don’t really suffer with my weight so that is one thing I don’t have to worry about. The most important thing in that regard is eating the right food.

“I would like to thank everybody who rang the hospital to see how I was and all those who came to see me and sent cards. It is hugely appreciated.”
