Probe continues after shots fired at boys
The parents of two young Limerick brothers who escaped injury when shots were fired at a playing pitch have not yet filed a complaint with gardaí.
It has also emerged last night that relatives of the 8 and 12-year-old boys are alligned to prominent members of a notorious southside criminal gang.
Although no official complaint has been made about Monday night's shooting, senior gardaí confirmed today that a full investigation is underway into the sinsister twist in the ongoing feud between two Limerick factions.
The car used in the gun attack which took place in a green in Garryowen at 9.10pm was later found burned out in the Ballyclough area.
So far the weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered.
It is understood that two shots were fired at the young boys, who were the only people in the playing green at the time.
Under-age members of a local soccer team had been training in the same area shortly before the shooting.
"Any discharge of fire-arms in public is serious but when shots are fired in the vicinty of children it is extremely serious," said one senior garda.
Tensions in the long-running feud between Limerick criminal gangs heightened again recently with a spate of shootings which took place last month.
Increased armed patrols were deployed in certain parts of the city following 11 separate shootings in just seven days.
Gardaí confirmed last night that these extra patrols are still in place in some of the city's flashpoint areas.
