Hanafin urges universities to reconsider maths policies

Minister for Education Mary Hanafin is appealing to colleges and universities to change their policies on refusing students who study foundation-level maths.

The call comes as this year's Leaving Cert results show on-going poor performance in maths and science subjects.

Around 20% of students won’t qualify for many universities because they failed maths or took the foundation level paper.

Ms Hanafin said today that the system whereby some colleges insist on students having a minimum of a pass in ordinary level maths is both unnecessary and unfair.

She said some students who would pass foundation-level maths were ending up failing the ordinary paper due to the entry requirements.
