No evidence of engine failure in Westmeath plane crash

15/08/2006 - 11:06:36
An investigation into a light aircraft crash in Co Westmeath earlier this year has concluded that the plane involved did not suffer engine failure.

Two Dublin-based pilots died when the Cessna plane crashed into a field in Raharney on May 25.

A preliminary report released by the Department of Transport's air accident investigation unit today says there is no evidence of engine failure before the crash.

It says witnesses working on a house close to Raharney heard the sound of a revving engine before seeing the aircraft spiralling vertically down to earth.

A survey of the accident site found no wreckage path and all components of the plane were located at the site.

The Department of Transport is continuing to investigate the crash, with a full report due to be published at a later date.
