7,000 failed asylum seekers have fled before deportation

More than 7,000 failed asylum seekers have reportedly gone into hiding or fled Ireland in the last seven years after they were issued with deportation orders.

Reports this morning say gardaí have been unable to enforce just over half of the almost 14,000 orders issued since 1999 because they cannot find the people facing deportation.

Gardaí believe the vast majority of these people have fled Ireland, probably for other EU states, rather than be forcibly returned to their home countries.
