Pavarotti speaks of ‘God’s help’ in cancer battle

15/08/2006 - 15:58:23
Luciano Pavarotti is getting a hand from God in his battle against pancreatic cancer, the tenor was quoted as saying in an interview published today in an Italian newspaper.

"Now I only need God's help, and it really seems to me that he is giving it to me," Pavarotti was quoted as telling Corriere della Sera in an interview in his villa near the Adriatic sea resort town of Pesaro.

The interview, with the singer sitting in a wheelchair, was conducted by Ettore Mo, a veteran correspondent of the Milan daily and a friend of Pavarotti for some 40 years. Mo wrote that some of Pavarotti's replies disturbed him, including one in which the 70-year-old singer told him, without explanation, that he doesn't want to hear himself sing on recordings anymore.

After reminiscing fondly on his performances with fellow opera stars Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras in a series of concerts by the trio of tenors, Pavarotti added: ``It was a great beautiful season that we had. But I don't listen to myself (singing) anymore.''

Last month, in an interview with Turin daily La Stampa, Pavarotti said he had no intention of letting the curtain fall on his singing career despite his age and surgery for cancer.
