Most workers have inadequate income protection

15/08/2006 - 11:53:14
The vast majority of Irish workers have inadequate arrangements to protect their income in the event of a major, prolonged illness, according to the Friends First financial institution.

The company says research it has carried out found that just 15% of private-sector workers would receive sick pay from their employers for more than a six-month period.

It says this leaves 85% of the private-sector workforce reliant on state benefits if they are out sick for more than six months.

The current state benefit in the event of illness amounts to just €8,622 for a single person or €16,088 for a person with one adult dependent and two children.
