Pakistan probes Islamic charity transfers
Pakistan has been probing the transfer of millions of pounds from five Islamic charities in the US and Britain to people in Pakistan since December, but the inquiry is not linked to the recently foiled London terror plot, an official said today.
The intelligence official who is involved in the ongoing probe said American and British authorities requested Pakistan to investigate the alleged transfer of funds. Three Pakistani men have since been arrested.
“Since December, we have conducted five inquiries on request by UK and US intelligence authorities, which (learned that) funds from Muslim charities there were transferred into individuals’ accounts here,” said the official, who declined to be identified.
The official said he did not know what prompted the US and British requests to investigate the transfers, but he said he did not believe the calls were made in response to a plot foiled last week to bomb several US-bound passenger jets from Britain.
