Cullen dismisses ‘backdoor for terrorism’ suggestions
Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has dismissed concerns that Ireland could be used as a 'back door' by Islamic extremists seeking to bomb Britain.
Several experts have suggested that Ireland is a "weak link", due to lax airport security.
The Government has already dismissed the suggestion, saying the Irish authorities work closely with their British counterparts to assess and counteract any risks.
Mr Cullen reiterated those comments today and insisted that Ireland was taking security measures appropriate to the threat posed.
"Ireland, along with all of our colleagues in the international sphere, are very aware of the threat that there is from terrorism," he said, "but that doesn't mean that you just stop everything.
"You have to find a balance. You have to be fully alert and aware and bring the maximum effort on your security side to bear, and Ireland is doing that."
