Gerrard and Bellamy on bench for Community Shield
13/08/2006 - 14:56:41Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez sprang a surprise by leaving captain Steven Gerrard and striker Craig Bellamy out of his starting line-up to face Chelsea in the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium today.
The pair began the match on the bench alongside Xabi Alonso and Sami Hyypia - meaning just five of his likely first-choice side will start.
Danish defender Daniel Agger came in alongside stand-in captain Jamie Carragher, with Chile winger Mark Gonzalez on the left and Bolo Zenden moving inside to accompany Mohamed Sissoko.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will field a much stronger line-up, with both his new star signings Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko starting, although goalkeeper Petr Cech is absent as he recovers from a shoulder injury.
