Disney postpones 'family' phone service launch

13/08/2006 - 16:44:57
Entertainment group Disney has postponed the launch of a UK mobile phone service aimed at families, it was reported today.

The cartoon giant intended to have handsets in the shops in time for Christmas, but is understood to have put off the launch because of a difficult retail market.

“Distribution outlets have been consolidating and there is now increased competition,” the firm told the Sunday Telegraph. “However, we will keep one eye on the landscape.”

Called Disney Mobile, the service would have allowed parents to cap the amount youngsters spent on calls. It also gave parents the chance to customise their children’s handsets so they could only dial pre-approved phone numbers.

The phones, which were to be launched over the O2 network, would have been standard designs rather than Disney-customised. However, Disney planned to run all aspects of the service, including development, distribution and billing.
