Teenagers to be invited to debates on age of consent

Up to 200 teenagers will reportedly be invited to a series of debates being organised by the Government to discuss the law on the age of sexual consent.

Reports this morning say the debates will take place between September and November and the teenagers are being invited to make sure the consultation process is a wide-ranging as possible.

The move follows the controversy surrounding the Supreme Court judgement earlier this year that ruled Ireland's laws on underage sex were unconstitutional.

The Government responded to the move by rushing through legislation that set the age of consent to 17.
