Irish Road Haulage Association calls for reduction on fuel tax
09/08/2006 - 16:25:33Truckers today said the Government must reduce tax on fuel, as prices continue to soar.
The Irish Road Haulage Association said Minister for Finance Brian Cowen cannot keep ignoring their plea.
A litre of petrol is expected to hit €1.30 by the end of August, with diesel only slightly cheaper.
SIPTU has joined calls from the IRHA for the Government to slash VAT on fuel.
Hauliers spokesman Jimmy Quinn says it would also get rid of the black economy in the sector.
“It's a simple solution. It's based on VAT invoices that people produce.”
He added: “It's practically foolproof and it would certainly bring people who are operating in the shady economy out into the light and that's to be welcomed if nothing else."
