Greens publish proposals to tackle pensions crisis

The Green Party is calling for a doubling of the State pension as part of policy proposals aimed at averting a pensions crisis in the coming decades.

In paper published today, the party is also proposing that tax relief on pension contributions be replaced by a new scheme whereby the State would contribute directly to workers' pension funds, depending on the amount invested by the employee.

The Greens have also proposed a new optional initiative under the PRSI system whereby the employee, the employer and the Government would all make contributions to a special pension fund.
