Terry backs Jarosik

08/08/2006 - 09:00:59
Chelsea skipper John Terry is backing his former team-mate Jiri Jarosik to impress for Celtic this season.

Jarosik, the 28-year-old Czech Republic midfielder, swapped Stamford Bridge for Parkhead in the summer having been on loan to Birmingham for a season to get regular first-team action.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan hopes the arrival of Jarosik can spark more success for his side.

And as Jarosik returns to Chelsea with his new club tomorrow for a friendly, Terry believes the midfielder can meet his manager’s expectations.

The England international, 25, said: “He will do very well for Celtic and up in Scotland.

“It is good to see him get away from Chelsea and get a great move like that.

“It was a frustrating time for him here but he has shown what a good player he is in the past. He is also a good lad.

“He can bang in a few goals and can definitely play a bit. He is great at set-pieces, is a good passer and he is a great addition.”

Terry insists Jarosik and his new team-mates can expect a rough ride from the London giants tomorrow.

“The Celtic game will be the first home game since getting back from the American tour and we all want to win it,” added the defender.

“Celtic have proved they are a great side and they have supporters all over the place so are a different class.

“They are a few games into their season so it is going to be a very good test for us and we will be ready for the new season.

“It is going to be a great atmosphere with our fans welcoming us back and we want to give them and ourselves a victory.”

Injured Chelsea and England star Joe Cole also believes his team-mates will be pumped up for the game.

The Barclays Premiership champions are just days away from the Community Shield showdown with Liverpool in Cardiff.

Cole, who is facing a spell on the sidelines, added: “We are still particularly looking forward to the Celtic because it is two British champions going head-to-head in a big game.

“It’s always interesting to have this battle of Britain game and it is like a derby game because of the passion.

“It’s also the final game as well before the Community Shield and we want to go into that with a victory.”
