Cox pair handed targets
Clive Cox’s progressive three-year-old Dunelight is set to take a deserved step up in class in the Betfred Superior Mile at Haydock next month.
The Desert Sun colt pressed Spectait all the way to the line when the course record was shattered in the totesport Mile at Goodwood last week, eventually going down by half a length in the £150,000 attraction.
He had previously run out an impressive five-length winner of a valuable and competitive Ascot handicap and his handler feels his days in such company are probably numbered.
“He’s on a mark of 106 and is about to be raised again so we’ve decided to go for a Listed race over a mile at Haydock,” Cox explained.
Cox also had news of stablemate Woodcote, who will be aimed at the Ayr Gold Cup after going agonisingly close in big handicaps this season.
He was once again forced to settle for a supporting role when finishing a close-up seventh from an unfavourably low draw in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood on Saturday.
“He was drawn low and ended up virtually in the middle of the course although he did win his race of the stand side group,” Cox said.
“As long as it doesn’t get too wet, the Ayr Gold cup will be on his agenda.”
