FG urge Government crackdown on burglar alarm noise
The Government is being urged to crack down on householders whose burglar alarms keep disturbing the peace in built-up areas.
New house alarms should switch off after no more than 15 minutes, but many older devices are not maintained or linked up to proper monitoring services.
Fine Gael's Brian Hayes has said that the law governing noise pollution was not designed to deal with nuisance alarms, and needs to be updated.
Under the current law, irritated neighbours have to take their plea for peace and quiet to the district court. Hayes has claimed there are more effective ways to deal with this type of noise pollution:
“I have proposed that the government will introduce a new law giving additional powers to the Gardaí to remove or stop an alarm that is continually causing noise pollution to a community,” he said.
“This is the same procedure as applies in London. It works very well in terms of the Met police authority enforcing this,” he said.
