Murphy smashes record to secure semi-final berth
Dubliner Barry Murphy broke an Irish senior record and qualified for this evening's semi-final in the 50m Freestyle during the day six of the European Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary today.
Murphy came home in a time of 22.77 seconds, which smashed Nick O'Hare's previous best time of 23.36secs that was set at the Phoenix Grand Prix in 1996.
This is the second Irish record he has broken at the championships after beating Earl McCarthy's best in the 100m Freestyle heats on Thursday.
There were three other Irish swimmers in action this morning on the penultimate day of the competition. Both Clare Dawson and Julie Douglas were in action in the 50m Freestyle.
Douglas failed to get close enough to her Irish record time and finished in a 26.79secs, while Dawson came home in a 27.51secs.
Ciara Farrell was also in action this morning for the Irish team. The Galway native was competing in the 50m Breaststroke and finished in a time of 33.50secs, completing her first appearance at a senior international event.
