Militants attack Kabul checkpoint

04/08/2006 - 07:04:41
Militants attacked a police checkpoint in Kabul, Afghanistan, sparking a battle with officers that left one insurgent dead, police said today.

Twelve men fired on the checkpoint in Qalai Haydar Khan on the western fringe of the city for an hour before fleeing late last night, said top Kabul police official Ali Shah Paktyawal. The body of one of the attackers was left on a field after the clash, he said.

Paktyawal said the attackers were Taliban, but offered no evidence to back up his claim they were affiliated with the hard-line militia that stages frequent attacks in the south of the country.

Such attacks are rare in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, which is patrolled by thousands of international soldiers.
