Klien close to new Red Bull deal

04/08/2006 - 11:14:43
Christian Klien claims he is close to agreeing a deal to stay on at Red Bull next season.

The Austrian has been comfortably out-scored by team leader David Coulthard in the Red Bull’s first two seasons in Formula One, raising fears his seat was under threat.

Coulthard is almost certain to be retained, and Klien claims he is optimistic of a new deal – particularly after scoring a point for just the second time this season last weekend.

He said: “It is looking quite good, and now there are a lot of discussions about next year.

“We didn’t get the results this year because of reliability issues and being a bit unlucky at the start of some races.

“This point in Hockenheim was a bit of a release, and now we will try to do the same in Hungary and Turkey.

“I think it is looking quite good that I continue with Red Bull next year.”

Klien is believed to be under pressure from Heikki Kovalainen for a race seat next season.

Renault are prepared to offer an engine deal to Red Bull but are also likely to insist on a seat for the young Finn, to whom Flavio Briatore has promised a race for 2007.
