Govt says Israel and Hezbollah should face punishment
The Irish Government is calling for both sides in the current Middle East conflict to be punished for targeting civilians in a flagrant breach of international law.
Junior Minister Conor Lenihan, who has responsibility for development and human rights, said today that he was angered by the actions of both sides in the conflict, which has already claimed hundreds of innocent lives over the past 24 days.
He has criticised Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and Israel's disproportionate use of force in response to the capture of two of its soldiers by the Islamic militant group.
Speaking after meeting Irish NGOs helping civilians in Lebanon, Mr Lenihan said both Israel and Hezbollah should be punished by the United Nations.
"Both sides are flagrantly in breach of international humanitarian law and there should and has to be consequences if we're to end the culture of impunity," he said.
