Report predicts more landslide activity in coming years

03/08/2006 - 07:31:19
The Geological Survey of Ireland has predicted that Ireland will experience increased landslide activity in the coming years due to a range of factors.

In a report out today, the organisation says the risk of landslides in upland areas has been underestimated.

It says many parts of the country could experience significant landslides in future due to increased infrastructure and urbanisation, as well as climate change.

The risk would also increase in cases where a dry spell is followed by periods of heavy rain.

The conclusions follow a two-year study by a team drawn from universities and state agencies.

The Geological Survey is recommending immediate action to curb the cost of future landslides through better understanding and mapping of such hazards and by improving the capability to mange and prevent these natural disasters.

It also says the issue of landslides should be considered during the planning process.
