More landslides expected
The Geological Survey of Ireland has warned that Ireland will experience more landslide activity in the coming years due to factors like climate change and increased development.
In a report out today, the organisation says the risk of landslides in upland areas has been underestimated and poor planning has led to some housing developments being constructed in areas where such natural disasters are likely to occur.
It says many parts of the country could experience significant landslides in future due to increased infrastructure and urbanisation, as well as climate change.
The risk would also increase in cases where a dry spell is followed by periods of heavy rain.
The conclusions follow a two-year study by a team drawn from universities and state agencies.
The Geological Survey is recommending immediate action to curb the cost of future landslides through better understanding and mapping of such hazards and by improving the capability to manage and prevent these natural disasters.
It says improved planning by local authorities is needed to prevent landslides posing a risk to public safety.
Speaking at the launch of the report, Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey said he would taking the recommendations on board.
