North authorities urged to crack down on mini-motorbikes

02/08/2006 - 11:39:17
The father of a young girl badly injured in an accident involving so-called mini-motorbikes is calling for a tightening of the laws governing such vehicles in the North.

The bikes can be purchased for as little as £100 (€146) and can reach speeds of up to 60mph.

They are often bought as toys for young children, but are also used by adults in off-road "mini-moto" events.

The authorities in England and Wales launched a crackdown on such bikes earlier this week, pointing out that they are illegal to use in public areas.

The Reverend Albert Griffith, whose 10-year-old daughter was badly injured in a mini-moto accident, is now calling for similar measures in the North.

He wants adults to be fined if their children are found to be driving the bikes in public.
