Dáil committee slams Israel's Lebanon assault

Israel's on-going bombardment of civilian areas in Lebanon is coming under intense criticism at a meeting of the Oireachtas foreign affairs committee today.

Committee chairman Michael Woods said it was totally unacceptable for the Israeli military to turn southern Lebanon into a free-fire zone.

He said Israel's activities, which are ostensibly designed to halt Hezbollah rocket attacks, are totally disproportionate.

Labour Party TD Michael D Higgins, meanwhile, angrily condemned the Israeli bombardment and said Syria and Iran must be included in any peace talks.

He also said the international community, but failing to halt the conflict, was betraying the refugees of Lebanon.
