Ahern confident of winning next year’s election
02/08/2006 - 16:02:40Bertie Ahern has said he is confident going into next summer's general election - despite lagging support at the opinion polls.
Support for the Fianna Fáil party remained static at 35% in a recent Red C political poll.
The Taoiseach also shrugged off suggestions earlier this week that he is planning to "buy" the next elections by embarking on a public spending spree.
He says he is not hugely concerned about the upcoming election but will do everything in his power to increase his party's chances of success.
The Taoiseach said: “There's always pressure but I don't think too much about it. (All)… elections are important - you just have to get on with the job an do your level best."
