Doherty in line for Croker start

01/08/2006 - 13:05:56
Donegal should be boosted by the return to fitness of Michael Doherty for Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Cork (Croke Park, throw-in 4pm).

The Four Masters ace has been out of action since sustaining a serious knee injury in the Ulster semi-final against Derry six weeks ago.

Since then, Donegal have lost out on Ulster honours to Armagh but they squeezed past Fermanagh in last weekend's qualifiers to hand Doherty another shot at a Croke Park appearance.

Donegal boss Brian McIver admitted that the 22-year-old was "touch and go" to face Fermanagh, but he failed a late fitness test.

Free-taker Doherty is admittedly "confident" of featuring against the Rebels this weekend and McIver may alter his attacking unit again after they had to rely on a point apiece from three of their substitutes to see them through against Fermanagh.

Those scorers Colin Kelly, Adrian Sweeney and Stephen McHugh, along with Doherty, will all be pressing for inclusion. Meanwhile, midfielder Brendan Boyle should start after overcoming a calf injury.
