South African workers now getting legal minimum wage
Nineteen South African workers who were being paid just €2.50-an-hour to fit seatbelts on school buses are now receiving the legal minimum wage, according to Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan.
Mr Morgan exposed the workers' case last month, saying they were exploited by a company working on the Bus Éireann contract.
He said today that the publicity had led to most of their concerns being addressed and the only outstanding issue was that of retrospective pay.
However, he said this was just one case and there were probably many more instances across the country of migrant workers being exploited by employers who flout labour laws.
Mr Morgan is calling on the Government to end its "lax attitude" towards such exploitation and ensure that anyone working on a state contract is receiving the legal level of pay.
