Councillors earning almost €30,000 a year
01/08/2006 - 07:34:10City and county councillors are reportedly earning an average salary of almost €30,000 each, despite the part-time nature of their positions.
Councillors earn a formal salary of €15,000, but reports this morning say they are almost doubling this figure through extra payments from public bodies.
The reports say an examination of the payments made to councillors last year found they earned an average of €29,550, almost the same as the average industrial wage.
The highest-paid earner made almost €83,000.
Minister for the Environment Dick Roche is defending the payments, saying he believes councillors do a good job and earn their money.
