Holder Carvil out of South of Ireland
Holder Jim Carvill said goodbye to the South of Ireland title on a wet and windy afternoon at Lahinch.
The 39-year-old Warrenpoint man was beaten 2 and 1 by 22-year-old Robert McCarthy from the Island in the fourth round and confessed that he will not be playing a full championship schedule next year.
“That’s it, finished,” Carvill said, shortly after his 15th par putt to take the match up the 18th had horseshoed out of the hole.
“I might play the East next year but it is too much of a commitment for me these days. I have always enjoyed coming to Lahinch but these conditions are not for me.”
McCarthy chipped in for an eagle on the fourth to take the lead and his short game was the difference in the end on a day when it was difficult in the extreme to hit greens in regulation.
If he is to progress all the way to the final he may well have to tackle last year's beaten finalist and the reigning North of Ireland champion Darren Crowe after the Dunmurry man racked up two hard-
fought wins on a storm-tossed day at the Clare links.
After a one-hole winner over North West's Garreth Mallon in the morning, Crowe had a far easier time in the afternoon as he beat Ennis' Stephen Loftus 3 and 2.
In the bottom half of the draw, Clandeboye's Jonathan Caldwell continued his excellent season with a 4 and 3 win over Rathsallagh's Thomas O'Neill, followed by a notable 3 and 2 victory over Dubliner Mark Ryan, the 2003 West of Ireland champion, now resident in Lahinch.
Runner-up in the East of Ireland championship at Easter, Caldwell will now face the impressive Niall Kearney in today's fifth round following the Royal Dublin man's ominous 6 and 5 demolition of
Limerick Gerard Vaughan.
