Whitehouse eagle bags car in Hamburg

Birmingham’s Tom Whitehouse won a €33,000 car in the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship today – just weeks after writing off his in an accident.

Whitehouse holed his second shot with an eight iron from 147 yards on the par four ninth, winning the Audi TT Coupe on offer for the first eagle.

That took the 26-year-old out in 30 and the qualifying school winner eventually carded a second round 65 to move from a share of 127th place overnight to safely inside the projected cut mark at five under par.

“They’re really nice cars, the girlfriend will be all over it I’m afraid. But she can get her grubby hands off it!” Whitehouse joked.

“It’s quite ironic, just a month ago I had a little bump...well I thought it was a little bump in France which turned into my car being written off.

“Now I’ve got an estate car and a TT. I could fit the TT in the back.”

On the shot itself, Whitehouse added: “My tee shot ran just through the fairway but it wasn’t in a bad lie. I was in between a 9 or an 8 iron but the water was at the front and to be honest I wasn’t really playing for the distance where the flag is.

“I was trying to hit it a few yards past and when we got up there the pitch mark was past the pin and it had actually spun back into the hole. It was obviously meant to be.”
