Donegal leaves two vacancies

28/07/2006 - 00:29:22
Donegal manager Brian McIver has left two vacancies in his side for Sunday's All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Fermanagh (Enniskillen, throw-in 2pm).

With defender Paddy Campbell suspended and regular free-taker Michael Doherty still working his way back from a knee injury, McIver has left both the full-back and left corner forward berths vacant.

The 22-year-old Doherty has resumed training after injuring himself against Derry last month but may only be fit enough for a substitute's role.

If Doherty does not make it, former All-Star Adrian Sweeney, who started the Ulster final defeat to Armagh, should retain his place.

Elsewhere in the side, corner backs Neil McGee and Karl Lacey have switched wings with Gweedore's McGee, who turned 21 earlier this month, moving to the right flank.

McIver has made one definite change in personnel with Conal Dunne, who disappointed against Armagh, losing his place in attack to Glenswilly youngster Colin Kelly.

Kelly's inclusion at right corner forward coincides with the moving of his club mate Ciaran Bonner from the left wing up to full-forward.

Rory Kavanagh, who was voted the GPA's Player of the Month for June, will drop back to fill the number 12 jersey.

If Doherty does start, the Donegal forward sextet will have an average age of just 23 - Kelly, Bonner and Doherty are all only 22, with centre forward Michael Hegarty the elder statesman at 27.

Fermanagh won the sides' last championship clash. In the 2004 qualifiers, the Erne men won 1-10 to 0-12 after extra-time with Eamonn Maguire scoring the only goal. Ominously, Donegal also lost that year's Ulster final.

DONEGAL (SFC v Fermanagh) - P Durcan; N McGee, AN Other, K Lacey; E McGee, B Monaghan, B Dunnion; N Gallagher, B Boyle; C Toye (capt), M Hegarty, R Kavanagh; C Kelly, C Bonner, AN Other.
