The Exchequer’s stamp duty receipts from property transactions have increased three-fold in the past three years, according to the Central Statistics Office today.

In its latest assessment of the construction and housing sector, the CSO says a total of more than €2bn was paid over in 2005.

Elsewhere, today's figures also show that mortgage debt has increased from €33bn in 2000 to €100bn in 2005, while the average size of a mortgage last year was €200,000, compared to just over €100,000 in 2000.

Eighty-six thousand new houses and apartments were constructed last year and one-in-eight Irish workers is now employed in construction, compared to an EU average of around one-in-12.
