Adams says DUP cannot hold up progress forever

28/07/2006 - 13:29:49
Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said the DUP will not be allowed to hold up progress in the North forever.

Mr Adams was speaking at a press conference today to mark the first anniversary of the IRA's historic decision to announce an end to its armed campaign.

The Irish and British governments say they believe the IRA is genuinely living up to its commitment to end both paramilitarism and criminality.

However, there has been little progress over the past year due to the DUP's ongoing refusal to share power with Sinn Féin.

Mr Adams said today that the DUP could not have a veto over progress and will eventually have to engage with republicans.

"They can have no veto on the equality agenda and on all the other necessary changes which are going to be brought about in the time ahead," he said.

"So we just continue with that process and, at some point, the DUP will decide to engage. What they want now is to engage on their own terms, but they can't have that."
